Silver Linings: Fiji’s 7s Coach Reflects on Olympic Journey

Fiji Men’s 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau shared his pride in the team’s performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, despite their close loss in the final, which earned them a silver medal.

Upon returning to Nadi yesterday morning, both the men’s and women’s teams received a warm welcome at the Tanoa International Hotel, complete with a traditional ceremony.

Kolinisau reflected on the team’s journey, revealing that everything had proceeded as planned until the final match against the host nation, France, where they faced a narrow defeat.

“It’s great to be back in the country and reconnect with our loved ones. It’s wonderful to see everyone,” Kolinisau stated.

He recognized the team’s achievements and highlighted the importance of the silver medal they earned at the Olympics. “I gathered the boys and told them that securing a silver medal in the Olympics, which happens every four years, is something to be proud of,” he said.

Kolinisau expressed his hopes to continue coaching but noted that the decision rests with the Fiji Rugby Union and its board. “I need to meet with the Fiji Rugby Union and the board because my contract ends with the Olympics. I would love to stay, but that’s up to them,” he mentioned.

He also praised the new players on the team, noting their enthusiasm and potential for future competitions. “If the FRU gives me a chance to coach for the next Olympics, it will be a great opportunity to develop my players over the next four years,” he added.

Kolinisau acknowledged the support from the public and the players’ families, emphasizing the critical role that fans played in the team’s achievements. He expressed deep gratitude for their steadfast support, crediting them as a vital component of the team’s journey.
