Silktails Soar to Historic Home Victory in Nail-Biter!

The Kaiviti Silktails achieved a significant milestone by securing their first home victory in the Jersey Flegg Cup rugby league, narrowly defeating the Illawarra Dragons 23-22 at Churchill Park in Lautoka. This exciting win not only highlighted their determination but also showcased their competitive edge, as they celebrated alongside the prestigious Apisai Toga Bowl.

Taking advantage of the warm weather, the Silktails displayed strong offensive and defensive prowess, establishing a 16-6 lead at halftime. Mikaele Senibua emerged as the standout performer, scoring a remarkable hat-trick of tries, while teammate Senivalati Vunibola successfully converted two attempts. The Dragons were only able to score one try in the opening half, orchestrated by Toby Rumble and converted by Eden Hodges.

In the second half, the Dragons made strategic adjustments that paid off, with Rumble crossing for another try and Hodges converting, narrowing the Silktails’ lead to 16-12. The match took a turn when Jesse Williams added another try for the Dragons, giving them an 18-16 lead after Clay Baldock’s conversion.

With just eight minutes left on the clock, birthday boy Adrea Ramabuke scored a crucial try for the Silktails to regain the lead, successfully converted by Vunibola. However, the Dragons countered swiftly, with Williams scoring again to level the match, but Baldock’s missed conversion left both teams tied, setting up an exhilarating conclusion.

In a thrilling finish, Meli Setaki executed a clever field goal in the final seconds, sealing the Silktails’ narrow victory at 23-22. Head coach Timoci Duve commended his team’s efforts and resilience: “We started well and got on the front foot early. We knew the Dragons were a strong team, so we prepared for that challenge.”

As they look ahead, the Silktails are set to face the Newcastle Knights in their next match at Lawaqa Park. Coach Duve recognizes the challenge presented by the Knights, stating, “The Knights will be tough, but we will prepare well for that.”
