Silktails Celebrate Nail-Biting Victory in Jersey Flegg Cup Showdown!

The Kaiviti Silktails celebrated their first home victory in the Jersey Flegg Cup rugby league on Saturday, triumphing over the Illawarra Dragons with a close score of 23-22 at Churchill Park in Lautoka. This notable win also included the team’s success in the prestigious Apisai Toga Bowl, showcasing their competitive spirit.

Taking advantage of the warm weather, the Silktails bolstered their intensity in both offense and defense to secure a 16-6 lead at halftime. Star player Mikaele Senibua made a significant contribution to the team’s success, scoring a hat-trick of tries, while Senivalati Vunibola successfully converted two. The Dragons managed only one try in the first half, courtesy of Toby Rumble, which was converted by Eden Hodges.

The second half saw the Dragons adjust their strategy and come out strongly, with Rumble scoring again and Hodges converting to bring the score to 16-12. As the match progressed, Jesse Williams scored for the Dragons, allowing them to take the lead 18-16 after Clay Baldock’s successful conversion.

With only eight minutes remaining, Taveuni native and birthday boy Adrea Ramabuke powered through for a crucial try, which Vunibola converted, putting the Silktails ahead once again. However, the Dragons responded quickly, with Williams scoring to level the match. Baldock’s missed conversion left the teams tied, setting the stage for a thrilling finish.

In a defining moment, Meli Setaki executed a smart play by slotting a field goal in the dying seconds, sealing the Silktails’ narrow victory at 23-22. Post-match, head coach Timoci Duve praised his team’s effort and resilience: “We started well and got on the front foot early. We knew the Dragons were a strong team, so we prepared for that challenge.”

Looking ahead, the Silktails will face the Newcastle Knights in their next match at Lawaqa Park. Coach Duve acknowledges the upcoming challenge, stating, “The Knights will be tough, but we will prepare well for that.”

This victory marks an encouraging turning point for the Silktails as they continue to develop and gain experience in the league, instilling hope among players and supporters alike. The commitment to growth and resilience demonstrated by the team reflects a promising foundation for their journey in competitive rugby.
