Nineteen-year-old Sikeli Suliasi from Tabalei, Magodro in Ba is generating excitement at the Fiji Sports Council U20 7s tournament taking place at Lawaqa Park. Despite facing the challenges of being deaf and mute, Suliasi has emerged as an exceptional player for the Uluimagodro 7s team. His remarkable skills on the field and unwavering determination have impressed both his teammates and coaches, positioning him as an emerging talent in Fijian rugby.
Samuela Navale, the head coach, speaks highly of Suliasi, referring to him as one of the team’s bright prospects. “He’s a very skilled player. He listens and follows instructions perfectly,” Navale remarked. The progress and competence Suliasi exhibits during drills, game strategies, and overall gameplay continue to inspire those around him. “It amazes us how he gives his best every time he’s on the field,” Navale emphasized.
Suliasi has become an indispensable asset for his team. “He’s our key player. He plays with so much passion, and we just love having him on our side,” the coach added. The team, acknowledging the long travel from their village, stays with their coach in Lautoka for training, allowing them to bond and improve together. “Training together in the village would be difficult, so I’ve brought them down to Lautoka to stay with me,” Navale explained.
In their opening match yesterday, the Uluimagodro 7s triumphed over the Lami Cavaliers with a score of 26-12, with Suliasi playing a crucial role in their victory.
