Nineteen-year-old Sikeli Suliasi from Tabalei, Magodro in Ba is making a remarkable impact at the Fiji Sports Council U20 7s tournament at Lawaqa Park. Despite being deaf and mute, Suliasi has emerged as a key player for the Uluimagodro 7s team, showcasing exceptional skill and unwavering determination that has caught the attention of teammates and coaches.

His head coach, Samuela Navale, regards him as one of the team’s most promising talents. “He’s a very skilled player who listens and follows instructions impeccably,” Navale stated. The team is continually impressed by Suliasi’s capacity to execute drills, game plans, and strategies with remarkable precision despite his challenges. “He always plays according to plan, and it amazes us how he gives his all every time he’s on the field,” Navale added.

Suliasi has become an integral part of the team. Navale described him as the team’s “trump card,” emphasizing his passion and how much the team enjoys having him on their side. Due to the long distance from their village, the players are staying with their coach in Lautoka to train together. “Training in the village would be difficult, so I’ve brought them down to Lautoka to stay with me,” Navale explained.

In their opening match, Uluimagodro 7s secured a victory against Lami Cavaliers with a score of 26-12, with Suliasi playing a crucial role in the win.

This story highlights the triumph of the human spirit, showing how passion and teamwork can help overcome challenges. Suliasi’s journey serves as inspiration, proving that determination can lead to success on and off the field. His achievements not only contribute to the team’s performance but also raise awareness and appreciation for athletes with disabilities.
