Beyond the headline

In the latest development, Sigatoka Town Council has moved to quash social media rumours that the town’s iconic stallion monument at the central roundabout had been damaged, confirming instead that the structure was deliberately taken down as a safety precaution amid adverse weather linked to Tropical Cyclone Vaianu.

Chief Executive Officer Muni Anand Samy Pillay said the decision to remove the statue was proactive and made with public safety as the paramount concern. “The structure was intentionally and safely brought down by the Council as a precautionary measure in response to the adverse weather conditions associated with Tropical Cyclone Vaianu,” he said, stressing that council crews carried out the operation in a controlled manner.

The Council said the measure was intended to prevent potential damage from strong winds and to protect the surrounding area and road users. Pillay noted the authority had invested significantly in the monument and therefore took all necessary steps to safeguard both the structure and the public space around the roundabout during the period of heightened weather risk.

The clarification comes after posts on social media suggested the statue had fallen or been damaged during the storm. The Council’s statement aims to correct that impression and to reassure residents that the removal was planned rather than the result of a collapse. Pillay also urged members of the public to exercise restraint and respect in online discussions about the monument, describing it as a valued symbol for the town.

Council officials confirmed the stallion will be reinstated once weather conditions stabilise and it is deemed safe to do so. No timeline for reinstallation was provided; the Council said it will monitor forecasts and structural safety before arranging for the monument to be returned to its place at the roundabout.

The move reflects a broader precautionary approach being taken in parts of the country as authorities brace for impacts from Tropical Cyclone Vaianu. Removing potentially vulnerable public structures ahead of severe wind events is a mitigation measure intended to reduce the risk of debris and secondary damage. For Sigatoka, the temporary removal of the celebrated stallion underscores the priority being placed on safety over symbolism while the cyclone threat persists.
