Siblings Set to Make Boxing History in Fiji Showdown!

Three International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Asia Pacific titles are set to be contested at the upcoming South Pacific Boxing Promotions event next month. Adi Narayan, chairman of the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF), confirmed on Tuesday that the event has received official endorsement from IBO Australia.

Scheduled for October 26 at Prince Charles Park in Nadi, the program will not only feature international title bouts but also include a local title fight and several local matches, including a women’s bout. This event is notable as it marks the first time siblings will compete for international titles; Sebastian Singh will face “King” Tonga Tongotongo for the IBO Asia Pacific cruiserweight title, while his younger brother Ubayd Haider will challenge China’s Runqi Zhou for the IBO Asia Pacific featherweight title.

Additionally, Winston Hill will take on Lachlan O’Shea in the super welterweight category. Narayan emphasized the significance of this occasion, stating, “This is a unique event; I can’t remember the last time something like this has occurred in the last three years. It presents a valuable opportunity for our boxers to showcase their skills on an international stage.”

In another match, Hill’s brother, Jonathan Pedro Hill, will compete against Siliveni Nawai for the Fijian super middleweight title, and Jese Ravudi will square off against Vanuatu’s Roy Ser in a separate bout.

Narayan commended promoter Freddy Chand and director Mohammed Shameem for their contributions in organizing the event. Chand noted that these fights are opening new avenues for local boxers, including women athletes. The outcome of the women’s match between Amo Wai and Maureen Chand will determine who gets an opportunity to fight in England.

Chand also mentioned the possibility of a world title shot for Winston Hill, contingent upon his performance in this bout, which would be granted by the IBO.

To ensure the safety of all attendees during the fights, Chand reassured fans that stringent security measures will be in place, addressing concerns following a recent incident at Lawaqa Park. He urged all boxing clubs and fighters to ensure their trainers are registered with the BCF.

Chand stated that only four individuals will be permitted in the ring at any time: one boxer, two trainers, and, if applicable, a licensed cart man. He emphasized that any boxer without registered trainers would be paired with someone who is officially registered. To enhance security, 30 private security personnel and 25 police officers will be present at the event. An international IBO referee will also assist local referees and officials during the matches.
