Roneil Sami emerged victorious at the NWBSA Lautoka Open Snooker tournament this past weekend, securing a narrow 3-2 win over his brother, Muni Sami, in a captivating final held at the Lautoka Club. This victory not only earned Roneil a prize of $1,000 along with a trophy, but also highlighted the competitive spirit within the Sami family as both brothers showcased their skills.
In the semi-finals, Roneil demonstrated his prowess by defeating Scotty with a score of 3-1, while Muni faced a tough challenge against Esala Talebula, ultimately winning 3-2 in a closely contested match. The journey to the finals began with Roneil overcoming Tarun 3-1 and Muni defeating David by the same score in the quarter-finals.
The tournament, which attracted a total of 34 players from various parts of Fiji, was sponsored by Singh’s Rental and is now confirmed as an annual event to coincide with the Lautoka Club’s AGM week. In recognition of their performances, the quarter-finalists received $100 each, and the semi-finalists took home $200 each.
Looking ahead, the NWBSA expressed gratitude to all participants and announced plans for additional open tournaments in the upcoming months. These events will function as ranking tournaments, with the top 16 players qualifying for the prestigious Champion vs. Champion competition scheduled for April next year.
This ongoing commitment to snooker in Fiji not only fosters competition but also brings together players and fans alike, creating a vibrant community around the sport. The enthusiasm surrounding upcoming events represents a positive outlook for snooker in the region.
