A recent court ruling has denied Daniel Bernad, the estranged husband of pop star Sia, sole custody of their 19-month-old son, Somersault Wonder, affectionately known as Summi. Bernad had filed an emergency request earlier this week, claiming Sia posed a “serious and immediate danger” to their son due to alleged substance abuse issues and being an “unfit and unreliable parent.”
However, court documents reveal that a judge determined there was insufficient evidence to grant Bernad’s emergency order. The judge stated, “The court finds that sufficient exigency for the requested emergency relief has not been shown at this time.” As a result, the existing custody agreement, established on August 1, 2025, remains in place, which gives Sia primary custody while Bernad will have limited supervised visitation.
In his filing, Bernad claimed Sia had recently been hospitalized for two weeks and tested positive for barbiturates and benzodiazepines. He criticized her behavior as reckless, stating that it displayed a lack of regard for Summi’s safety. Sia counters these allegations, asserting they are entirely unfounded and misleading. She stated that while she had struggled with addiction over 15 years ago, she has been sober for more than six months.
Sia has expressed her commitment to her recovery and explained that Bernad’s actions seem financially motivated, given his prior request for significant spousal support. She emphasized, “Dan’s attempt to weaponize my past sobriety journey… serves no legitimate purpose and is intended only to distort the facts.”
Sia also stated that she has been participating in a recovery program that includes regular drug testing, a plan that highlights her commitment to providing a safe environment for their son. Despite their ongoing disputes, Sia maintains focus on their son’s well-being, suggesting a path toward co-parenting that prioritizes his needs amid the complexities of their situation.
This case highlights the persistent issues surrounding custody disputes and the allegations of substance abuse, emphasizing the importance of protecting children’s interests during parental separations. While the legal battle continues, there remains hope that both parties can find common ground for the sake of their child’s future.
