The process to select a new police commissioner is progressing, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announcing that the list of candidates has been narrowed down to just a few contenders. As the chairperson of the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC), Mr. Rabuka confirmed the existence of a shortlist but chose not to reveal the specific names of the remaining applicants.

The procedure for appointing the police commissioner, as outlined in Section 129(4) of the 2013 Constitution, necessitates that the president makes the appointment based on recommendations from the COC and after consultations with the minister in charge of police.

The vacant position has sparked significant interest from a variety of distinguished candidates, including former Assistant Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, Acting Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, and Unaisi Vuniwaqa, who currently serves as the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Safety and Security.

This development reflects a proactive approach to filling crucial leadership roles within the police force, emphasizing a commitment to maintaining effective law enforcement and public safety within the community.

As the selection process continues, there is hope that a capable and dedicated individual will be chosen to lead the police force, which is vital for ensuring the safety and order of the public. The transparency of the process at this stage is encouraging and presents an opportunity for positive change within the police service.
