The coastline of Udu in Macuata is currently facing a troubling situation as pipes, nets, and suspicious tracker-like devices repeatedly wash ashore, raising fears among local villagers that these items are linked to drug trafficking, particularly methamphetamine. The lack of mobile network coverage in the area has left residents feeling isolated and unable to report these findings to authorities.
Local district representative Paulini Raumala has expressed her alarm regarding the situation, which she notes has persisted for over two years. She revealed that empty pipes often arrive on their shores, and the most recent discoveries were made this year. “No village has been spared from the usage of illicit drugs,” Raumala lamented, highlighting that formerly peaceful communities are now being stigmatized as “red zones” due to high drug use.
Josaia Waqanivalu from Vunikodi indicated that drug transportation may be facilitated by large ships navigating the waters near their coastline, as the area is poorly monitored by law enforcement. Despite raising these concerns repeatedly in meetings, Waqanivalu stated that no substantial action has been taken, increasing the urgency for patrols and community support to combat the issue. Villagers are particularly distressed by the white powder stains found on some of the washed-up items, indicating potential drug contamination.
Fiji Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has urged community members to share any relevant information regarding these suspicious finds to combat the growing drug issue effectively. He indicated that there are various avenues for reporting concerns directly to police or community representatives, as local committees engage regularly with law enforcement.
