Fiji’s Consumer Council is urging shoppers to exercise caution while making online purchases, particularly with Eid approaching. As many look to buy traditional clothing and accessories online for the celebration, there has been a noticeable increase in fraudulent activity targeting consumers. CEO Seema Shandil has emphasized the importance of ensuring that products are delivered on time and match their descriptions.

Shandil reported a concerning trend where sellers often request partial or full upfront payments, only to fail to deliver the promised items. The Council has received numerous complaints, including 44 against a single online trader in Lautoka where customers were left without the items they had paid for. In response to these rising scams, the Consumer Council is actively working with local police to investigate these deceptive practices.

Past festive seasons, including Diwali, have seen similar challenges, such as price gouging and misleading advertisements. Last year alone, the Council documented 163 complaints during Diwali, with affected consumers reporting losses exceeding $15,000, underlining the ongoing difficulties in consumer protection during such high-demand periods.

To safeguard themselves, consumers are advised to thoroughly check the credibility of online sellers, avoid impulsive purchases, and keep receipts to resolve any disputes. The Consumer Council is dedicated to fighting consumer fraud and encourages individuals to report any issues to the National Consumer Helpline or via email.

This Eid season, let us be vigilant and celebrate the joyous occasion while remaining mindful of online shopping risks. By staying informed and proactive, shoppers can enjoy the festivities without falling prey to scams.
