The Ministry for Women, Children and Social Protection has revealed troubling statistics regarding child abuse in 2023. A striking 73% of individuals responsible for child neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse are known to the victims, with 50% being immediate family members. This data, derived from the Child Welfare Act National Database, indicates that out of 1,477 reported cases, 68% fall under the categories of neglect and various forms of abuse.

Minister Lynda Tabuya emphasized that these alarming figures highlight a disturbing trend where child abuse often takes place within what is perceived to be a child’s safe environment. The prevalence of abuse among immediate family members underscores the urgent need for awareness and preventative measures within households.

This information was released to coincide with the International Day for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (PCAN) on November 19, and World Children’s Day on November 20, highlighting the critical need for ongoing conversations and actions to protect vulnerable children.

While the statistics are deeply concerning, they also serve as a call to action for communities, parents, and policymakers to come together and implement stronger protective measures and educational programs. By fostering a culture of awareness and support, there is hope for creating safer environments for children, where they can thrive without fear of abuse.

In summary, the data presented sheds light on the critical issue of child abuse and the significant role that family dynamics play, drawing a clear line between these grim statistics and the necessity for effective preventative strategies in our communities.
