“Shocking Statistics: Violence Affects Two-Thirds of Pacific Women”

Recent discussions have highlighted alarming statistics regarding violence against women in the Pacific region, with two out of three women indicating they have experienced some form of violence. This critical issue was addressed by Mereseini Rakuita, the principal strategic lead for Pacific Women and Girls, during a high-level panel at the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Meeting held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Reflecting on the progress made since the Beijing Platform for Action was established 30 years ago, Rakuita acknowledged the advancements, yet emphasized that significant challenges persist, particularly in terms of gender-based violence. She pointed out that gender equality is increasingly integrated into both regional and national development agendas, as confirmed by last year’s revitalized Pacific leaders’ gender equality declaration.

Rakuita commended the political commitment from various national governments in the Pacific that is leading to the development of policies recognizing the importance of gender equality. However, she underscored that despite promising efforts, the situation remains dire, with Pacific women facing a higher rate of violence compared to the global statistic of one in three.

Additionally, she noted that women’s representation in leadership roles is critically low, with only 7 percent of women in parliaments across the Pacific, excluding Australia and New Zealand. This statistic starkly contrasts with the global average of 27 percent, highlighting the urgent need for increased female representation and leadership.

Addressing the unique challenges faced by women in the informal economic sector was identified as imperative. Implementing appropriate policies and programs tailored to meet these challenges is essential for empowering Pacific women and reducing violence.

In conclusion, while the statistics are concerning, the dialogue surrounding gender equality and the commitment to addressing violence against women in the Pacific offers a hopeful path forward. Through continued advocacy, policy development, and prioritization of women’s rights, there is potential for meaningful change in the lives of Pacific women.
