The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has revealed grim statistics regarding sexual offenses in Fiji, particularly focusing on a recent case involving 14 indictments filed in the High Court. Disturbingly, 13 of the 14 victims were under the age of 18, highlighting a critical issue surrounding child safety and protection in the community.
Among the charges, which encompass 30 allegations including 20 counts of rape, two attempted rapes, and eight counts of sexual assault, notable cases have emerged. A 34-year-old man has been charged with raping his seven-year-old daughter, and a 67-year-old man faces four charges related to his nine-year-old granddaughter. Additionally, a 63-year-old is accused of raping and sexually assaulting his 15-year-old step-granddaughter.
The alarming trend continues with a 19-year-old charged with assaulting his cousin, and a 16-year-old facing charges for raping his six-year-old niece. Other charges are directed at a 17-year-old accused of raping a girl of the same age, and a 42-year-old man charged with kidnapping and raping his former girlfriend. Furthermore, additional cases involve men aged between 24 and 65 charged in separate incidents connected to minors.
One significant aspect highlighted by the ODPP is the complexity of these cases, as five involved familial relationships, raising critical issues regarding trust and safety within homes. It is worth noting that one case was withdrawn after being discovered as a false complaint.
