In 2023, a troubling report revealed that out of 1,477 cases of child abuse, a striking 73 percent of perpetrators are known to the victims. A significant portion of these offenders, 50 percent, are immediate family members. This information was disclosed by Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, and is based on data from the Child Welfare Act National Database.

The cases reported encompass a range of abuses, including neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. Minister Tabuya pointed out that such abuse often occurs within a child’s supposed safe environment, emphasizing the need for urgent intervention and prevention strategies. She underlined that the statistics have shown a steady increase, highlighting a pressing need to bolster efforts in child protection. The government is committed to promoting and safeguarding children’s rights, collaborating closely with child protection stakeholders to tackle welfare concerns effectively.

Tabuya also mentioned that each year, the government observes the International Day for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (PCAN) on November 19, followed by World Children’s Day on November 20. These events serve to celebrate children’s rights and advocate for necessary preventive measures against abuse and neglect, allowing reflection on the nation’s progress in ensuring child safety and rights fulfillment.

This report underscores the critical need for society to recognize the importance of child protection not just during commemorative events, but as a continuous effort throughout the year. As a community, there is hope that by intensifying prevention programs and support systems, we can create a safer environment for all children.

Summary: In 2023, 73% of reported child abuse cases involved perpetrators known to victims, with 50% being immediate family members. Minister Lynda Tabuya emphasizes the urgent need for effective intervention and prevention measures, supported by the government’s commitment to child welfare. Annually observed International Day for Prevention of Child Abuse serves to advocate for children’s rights and reflect on the country’s progress in safeguarding its youth.
