The economic impact of violence against children in Fiji has reached a concerning estimate of $460 million, according to Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection. This figure was brought to light during discussions surrounding the recently enacted Childcare and Protection Bill, which aims to address these alarming statistics revealed in a joint study conducted by the ministry and UNICEF.

According to the study, approximately 81% of children aged one to 14 endure various forms of violent discipline, while psychological aggression affects 65% of children, and 68% experience physical punishment throughout their childhood. The study also indicated a troubling trend known as poly-victimization, where a single child is exposed to multiple forms of abuse.

Minister Tabuya emphasized that the Childcare and Protection Bill reflects the Coalition government’s commitment to tackling these distressing rates of violence against children. She pointed out that the national development plan is focused on eradicating violence through the implementation of responsive policies and effective referral networks. The new legislation seeks to replace outdated child protection philosophies that have been in place for over half a century, which often prioritize rescue and removal rather than supporting the holistic development of children within their families and communities.

The passing of the Childcare and Protection Bill marks a significant step forward in addressing child welfare in Fiji and fostering a nurturing environment for children within their own communities.

In summary, while the statistics presented are indeed troubling, the legislative response signals a hopeful shift towards better protecting children and ensuring their development within a supportive framework. The commitment to reform and tackle these challenges illustrates a promising path towards a healthier and safer future for the youth of Fiji.
