Residents of Newtown, Cuvu, Nadroga, were left in shock after the body of a community member was discovered floating in the Cuvu River yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Ravnit Dass, 32, a mechanic.
Dass’s body was found by two farmers who were working on their plantations near the river.
According to Dass’s father, Rattan Kumar, 66, the last time they spoke was on Monday.
“He came home on Monday night at about 7 pm, dropped his tools, and mentioned that he was going to his friend’s house,” Mr. Kumar said. “That was the last time I heard from him until his body was discovered today.”
Nadroga Navosa Advisory Council chairman Subrail Narayan expressed that this was a significant loss to the community.
“He used to fix my vehicle. He was a smart and hard-working guy with a good heart,” Mr. Narayan said.
Police spokesperson Wame Bautolu stated that the police were informed around midday.
“Police managed to identify the male deceased, and additional details will be made available later. The investigation is ongoing,” he said.
Funeral arrangements will proceed after the post-mortem examination.
