Four police officers in Fiji are facing charges related to serious crimes, including assault causing actual bodily harm, rape, and bribery. This alarming development is highlighted in the Overall Crime Rate report for October 2023 released by the Fiji Police Force.

During this reporting period, there was a notable spike in violence, with 22 serious assaults on police officers documented. The police report indicates that drug-related offenses remain a significant concern, with 160 marijuana cases, 20 methamphetamine cases, and one cocaine case reported.

Crimes against children have surged dramatically, witnessing a 39 percent increase. Among these, a staggering 64 percent were sexual offenses, followed by 28 percent related to assault. Disturbingly, all perpetrators of these offenses against children were male family members, affecting a total of 168 minors, comprising 90 girls and 78 boys.

Crimes against women also showed a slight increase of 0.5 percent, predominantly related to assault (85 percent) and sexual offenses (15 percent). Of these offenses, 36 percent were domestic-related, indicating troubling patterns of violence within familial structures.

Overall, serious crime in Fiji rose by 17 percent, with sexual offenses experiencing a notable increase of 32 percent. Additionally, domestic violence against women and children escalated by 42 percent. Conversely, cases of robbery and aggravated robbery have seen a decrease in this reporting period.

Juki Fong Chew, the Acting Commissioner of Police, emphasized that the uptick in crimes, particularly those against women and children, tends to occur predominantly within the home, showcasing a critical need for intervention. He assured that the Fiji Police Force is committed to engaging with various stakeholders to tackle the root causes of these issues.

The increase in drug-related cases reflects ongoing law enforcement efforts to combat the drug trade in the Southern, Western, and Central Divisions. The police reported that of the 181 drug-related incidents, the bulk were associated with marijuana, while a small number were related to illicit drug cultivation.

Chew reinforced the police’s dedication to enhancing community safety by collaborating with stakeholders, particularly during the festive season operation, aiming to build safer communities through collective action.

This report serves as a sobering reminder of the challenges faced in maintaining community safety. However, the proactive measures being put in place by law enforcement and community collaboration present a hopeful path forward in addressing and reducing crime rates effectively.
