Shock and Tragedy: Man Charged with Murder After Elderly Assault in Suva

In a tragic incident in Suva, a 40-year-old man named Netani Toma has been remanded by the Magistrates Court following allegations of having fatally assaulted a 70-year-old man. Toma appeared before Resident Magistrate Sufia Hamza on the day of the hearing, where he was charged with one count of murder.

The court proceedings revealed that Toma was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the assault, which took place at the Namadai settlement in Namadi Heights. The elderly victim suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.

The court has scheduled the first mention of the case in the High Court for 22 November. It was also noted that Toma has the option to apply for bail in the High Court.
