Shift in Plastics Use: A Call for Traditional Practices

The permanent secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Dr. Sivendra Michael, has emphasized the urgent need to change people’s behavior regarding plastic usage. He believes that one effective approach to combat plastic pollution is to reconnect with traditional knowledge and practices.

Dr. Michael stated that fostering awareness is crucial for altering public perceptions of plastic use, which he sees as a change that must stem from within communities. He pointed out that for a true behavioral shift to occur, individuals must understand the impact of plastic on their daily lives.

He mentioned that many plastic users are unaware of the consequences of their actions. To address this, Dr. Michael advocates for simple discussions at the household level to help people realize how improper disposal of plastics affects the marine economy and their everyday existence.

He noted that historically, plastic usage was minimal, and there is an urgent need to revive traditional practices and knowledge regarding the use of natural materials, like wood and other local resources, in daily life.

Dr. Michael emphasized that the dependence on plastic is a constructed habit, and collaboration is essential to tackle this issue. He also highlighted the ongoing three-day Fiji National Symposium on Plastic Pollution, which began at the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat. This event aims to gather relevant stakeholders to discuss strategies for reducing the significant amount of plastic waste that accumulates at the Naboro Landfill.
