VONU has reaffirmed its dedication to marine conservation by supporting the Mamanuca Environment Society (MES) during the observance of World Turtle Day last Friday. An ocean conservation awareness event was held at Castaway Island, focusing on the protection of Fiji’s endangered sea turtles.
The initiative, which is named after “Vonu Dina,” the Fijian term for sea turtle, has seen VONU engage with MES in its Sea Turtle Conservation Project over several years. This program is vital for monitoring nesting turtles, educating island communities, and promoting responsible marine tourism throughout the Mamanuca Islands.
The event featured a range of activities including marine education sessions, beach clean-ups, and conservation awareness initiatives, encouraging participation from both resort staff and guests. MES Project Manager, Marica Vakacola, highlighted the importance of the Vonu Dina within the ecosystem, remarking that the ongoing partnership with VONU enables sustained conservation efforts throughout the year, not just during significant events.
World Turtle Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by marine life, but it also exemplifies the strength of collaboration among communities, conservationists, and purpose-driven businesses. The commitment from both VONU and MES reflects a promising path toward greater environmental stewardship, where the shared goal is to ensure healthy seas for future generations.
This celebration of marine conservation not only encourages community involvement but also fosters a hopeful message about the impact of teamwork in protecting endangered species. As days like World Turtle Day raise awareness, they inspire initiatives that contribute positively to marine biodiversity and the wellbeing of local ecosystems.
