Manchester United left back Luke Shaw will not participate in Wednesday’s League Cup match against Barnsley, according to manager Erik Ten Hag. Shaw has been recovering from a calf injury sustained at the beginning of pre-season training, and while he was expected to return after the international break, Ten Hag indicated that a precise timeline for his recovery remains uncertain.
“First, Luke Shaw is progressing but not ready yet to be selected,” Ten Hag informed the media. “We have a plan in our head for when he might be ready, but you are always dependent on how the progress will go. There are many factors that could either accelerate or slow down the recovery process.”
Ten Hag confirmed that Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt, and Lisandro Martinez are fit to play following their substitutions in the second half of United’s 3-0 victory over Southampton on Saturday. However, Manuel Ugarte, who made his debut for the club in that match, remains under consideration for selection.
“They are all available (Mazraoui, De Ligt, and Martinez). They are good,” said Ten Hag. “As for Ugarte, you will see tomorrow what the selection will be for this game.”
In addition to Shaw, United will be without Victor Lindelof, Tyrell Malacia, Leny Yoro, Mason Mount, and Rasmus Hojlund, all of whom are sidelined due to injuries. Ten Hag noted, “They are not ready for tomorrow. We will see, our progress will continue.”
The United manager expressed the team’s ambition to win trophies across competitions and highlighted the importance of player rotations due to the congested schedule. “I have many players available and we can make a selection from game to game. It’s not just about the starting XI. It’s a nice headache,” he stated.
