In an effort to eliminate plastic usage at the Shangri-La Yanuca Island resort, General Manager Francis Lee has announced plans to invest over $100,000 in constructing a bottling facility on-site. In a recent interview, he emphasized the resort’s commitment to moving away from plastic containers for toiletries like shampoo and conditioner, opting instead for eco-friendly palm ceramic containers.

Mr. Lee expressed his vision for the resort to no longer rely on plastic bottles, stating, “We want to use glass bottles and have our own water.” This initiative is expected to be implemented by the second quarter of next year, showcasing the resort’s dedication to sustainable practices.

In addition to reducing plastic use, the resort is also focusing on innovative ways to manage food waste. They have established herb gardens and grow a variety of vegetables, including cucumbers, eggplants, and tomatoes, while also raising chickens for egg production. Mr. Lee highlighted the importance of careful food preparation, especially when catering to over 1,000 guests during peak times, to minimize waste.

He underscored the moral obligation to avoid wastefulness, especially considering food scarcity in many parts of the world. By implementing strict controls on food preparation, the resort aims to ensure that all meals are managed responsibly. Every item prepared is labeled with its freshness duration, promoting a system that values both economic efficiency and ethical responsibility.

Overall, these initiatives reflect a growing trend among luxury resorts to prioritize sustainability and environmental consciousness. Such efforts not only contribute positively to the environment but also create a more meaningful experience for guests who value eco-friendly practices.

This proactive approach by Shangri-La Yanuca Island demonstrates that even luxury accommodations can play a crucial role in combatting plastic pollution and food waste. The commitment to sustainability may inspire other resorts and businesses to consider similar initiatives, fostering a collective effort toward environmental responsibility.
