A film screenplay focusing on Ukrainian soccer club Shakhtar Donetsk’s 2022 season is currently in development, highlighting their experiences during Russia’s full military invasion of the Donbas region. With the script being crafted by Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson, this venture was unveiled at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie seeks to portray an “underdog tale of grit, heart, and survival set against the backdrop of war,” as stated by the club and the film’s producers.
Shakhtar Donetsk has a notable history, regularly competing in the Champions League over the past two decades and reaching the quarterfinals in 2011. However, since 2014, the team has been exiled from Donetsk due to Russian-backed movements in Donbas. Despite these challenges, they continued to play home games in Ukrainian league and cup matches across various cities.
The 2022 season was particularly tumultuous. Shakhtar was leading the Ukrainian league when Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February. This led to the cancellation of the soccer season and necessitated the departure of international players from Ukraine, including many Brazilian athletes. Shakhtar managed to persist by participating in charity matches across Europe, even as some players were released from their contracts under FIFA’s emergency regulations.
Tamasy and Johnson expressed their honor in telling this story, describing it as a narrative enriched with emotional and inspiring elements, ultimately celebrating the triumph of the human spirit and core values such as freedom, compassion, and courage. Presently, Shakhtar ranks second in the Ukrainian league and is set to compete in Europe’s third-tier Conference League this season.
This film project resonates within a broader context of resilience amidst adversity, similar to other narratives arising from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Whether through the arts, sports, or military achievements, the stories emerging from Ukraine underscore the spirit and tenacity of its people. These creative endeavors and real-life accounts serve not only as reminders of the harsh realities faced by Ukrainians but also as beacons of hope for peace, stability, and the power of human endurance.
