Residents of Chandraiya Street in Nadera, Nasinu, are facing significant distress due to a persistent sewage overflow issue. The unpleasant odor has forced many to close their windows and doors to mitigate the stench.
Dalip Chand, a 70-year-old local, reported that the sewage chamber in front of his home has been overflowing since August. He expressed his frustration, explaining that he had contacted the Water Authority multiple times and even personally visited their office on September 6 to report the ongoing problem. After an inspection by the sewage department, no tangible action was taken, leading him to make further complaints without resolution. “They just come, see and go,” he lamented.
Mr. Chand emphasized the unhygienic conditions the overflow has created and expressed disbelief that responsible authorities are not taking the matter seriously.
Neighbor Roshika Singh, 45, echoed his concerns and noted that a Water Authority team had also come to inspect the issue a few times without following up with any corrective measures. “This is affecting us so badly,” she said, highlighting the health risks associated with sewage overflow, including exposure to germs and bacteria. The foul odor has permeated her home, reaching her bedroom and attracting flies.
Ms. Singh pointed out that the densely populated area increases the urgency of their complaints. “It’s not an isolated area. Houses are close together, and people walk through here. Children walking to school are just beside it. Won’t they be affected?” she questioned, adding that they have been reporting the issue for two months. With Diwali approaching, she raised concerns about outdoor celebrations being overshadowed by the ongoing sewage issue.
A spokesperson for the Water Authority of Fiji, Peni Shute, stated that inspections revealed a blockage in the sewer chamber on the property owner’s side.
