The Department of Environment has confirmed a sewage spill into a stream in Nabua, Suva, following a public report made on December 30, 2025. At approximately 3:43 PM, community members observed a bluish discoloration in the stream beneath the Jerusalem Road bridge, prompting immediate action from authorities.

Environmental officers were rapidly dispatched to investigate the situation. Their on-site evaluations traced the source of the contamination to an underground culvert located near the Nabua Sewerage Pump Station. To assess both the origin and the extent of the pollution, the officers employed drones to perform an aerial survey of the affected area.

The inspection findings indicated that untreated sewage was overflowing from the culvert into the stream, merging with the discolored water reported by the public. Authorities are planning further assessments and will implement follow-up actions to resolve the issue effectively.

This proactive response by the Department of Environment is crucial for safeguarding the local ecosystem and ensuring public health safety, highlighting the importance of community vigilance and rapid government response in environmental matters.
