Residents of Chandraiya Street in Nadera, Nasinu, are struggling with unbearable odors due to overflowing sewage in the area. Local resident, Dalip Chand, aged 70, reported that the sewer chamber in front of his home has been overflowing since August.
“I have called the Water Authority, and I even went to their office on September 6 to express my concerns,” Mr. Chand stated. “I visited the Kinoya and sewerage department, and while they came to assess the situation, no action has been taken since then.”
Despite multiple complaints following their visit, Mr. Chand noted that the authorities have merely visited, observed, and left without addressing the issue. He expressed the residents’ worries regarding the unhygienic conditions created by the sewage overflow.
“It is surprising that those responsible are not taking this matter seriously,” Mr. Chand added.
Another resident, Roshika Singh, 45, also mentioned that a team from the Water Authority of Fiji inspected the site two or three times without any subsequent action. “This is affecting us terribly,” Ms. Singh remarked. “This is not just leaking tap water; it’s sewage, which is connected to germs and bacteria. The smell has infiltrated my house, including my bedroom, attracting flies.”
Ms. Singh highlighted the area’s population density and emphasized that their complaints deserve serious attention. “It’s not an isolated area. Houses are closely situated, and children walk to school nearby. Won’t they be affected?” she asked.
“It’s been two months since we raised our concerns. With Diwali approaching and outdoor activities planned, how can we celebrate with this sewage overflow producing such a foul odor?” she questioned.
A spokesperson for the Water Authority of Fiji, Peni Shute, responded that inspections revealed the chamber on the owner’s property was blocked.
