Residents of Chandraiya Street in Nadera, Nasinu, are struggling with a severe sewage overflow issue that has compelled them to keep their windows and doors closed due to the foul odor. Dalip Chand, a 70-year-old local, reported that the sewage chamber in front of his home has been overflowing since August. He has made multiple complaints to the Water Authority, including a visit to their office on September 6, but no action has been taken to resolve the problem.
Chand described that officials from the sewerage department visited the site but failed to implement any solutions. “They just come, see and go,” he lamented, highlighting the residents’ growing concerns about health and hygiene in the area.
His neighbor, Roshika Singh, 45, corroborated that a team from the Water Authority had inspected the situation several times without follow-up action. “This is affecting us so badly,” she stated, emphasizing the health risks associated with raw sewage, such as germs and bacteria. Singh voiced her frustration as the smell pervades her home, even reaching her bedroom.
She noted the densely populated nature of their neighborhood, stressing that the ongoing sewage issues affect many people, including schoolchildren who pass by daily. With Diwali approaching and outdoor activities planned, she questioned how they could celebrate amidst the overwhelming stench.
In response, Water Authority spokesperson Peni Shute indicated that inspections revealed the sewage chamber was blocked on the owner’s side, suggesting a potential reason for the ongoing overflow issues.
