Residents on Chandraiya Street in Nadera, Nasinu, are dealing with a severe sewage issue that has forced them to keep their doors and windows closed due to the unpleasant smell. Dalip Chand, a 70-year-old resident, reported that a sewer chamber outside his home has been overflowing since August. He mentioned that he had reached out to the Water Authority multiple times, including a personal visit on September 6 to address the issue, but to no avail.
Chand expressed his frustration, stating that the officials came to inspect the problem but did not take any corrective action. “After their visit, I lodged additional complaints, but still no action has been taken. They simply come to look and leave,” he lamented. The unhygienic conditions have raised significant concerns among the residents.
Roshika Singh, 45, a neighbor, echoed Chand’s complaints, noting that the Water Authority has inspected the site a few times without effecting any changes. “This situation is affecting us significantly,” Singh said. “It’s not just a minor leak; this is sewage, which poses health risks due to germs and bacteria. The foul smell is infiltrating my home, including my bedroom, accompanied by flies.”
Singh emphasized the density of the area and insisted that their complaints require urgent attention. “This is a populated area where everyone can be affected. The houses are close together, people walk around here, and children attend school nearby. They surely cannot remain unaffected.”
With Diwali celebrations approaching, residents are increasingly anxious about how they will celebrate amidst the ongoing sewage overflow. As Singh pointed out, “It’s been two months since we started complaining. How can we enjoy outdoor activities with this unbearable odor?”
In response to the situation, Peni Shute, a spokesperson for the Water Authority of Fiji, stated that inspections revealed the issue was due to a blockage in the chamber on the owner’s side.
