Weather Update
Brought to you by the National Weather Forecasting Centre – as if you needed a reminder of who’s in charge of the weather!
Good morning, folks! As of 10:45 AM on this delightful Friday, January 24, 2025, a splash of moisture from the east is flowing in over Fiji. A nifty little trough of low pressure is making its way toward us like it forgot something at home. Expect cloud cover and some showers to crash the weekend party by Sunday!
Here’s your forecast until midnight tomorrow:
For the areas of Navua, Suva, Nausori, Tarzan (oops, Tailevu-Ra-Naitasiri), the eastern provinces of Macuata and Cakaudrove, as well as our island buddies Kadavu, Taveuni, and the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups: Get ready for a sky filled with clouds flirting with some showers, plus the occasional thunderstorm – it’s basically a hot tub of weather. Isolated heavy downpours are expected; these could lead to flash floods in low-lying spots. So, it might be wise to keep the floaties handy!
For the rest of Fiji: We’re talking partly cloudy skies where you might catch a few sunbeams peeking through, with some isolated showers and thunderstorms later on. And, yes, there might be some surprise heavy falls here and there, causing localized flooding for those who like to live dangerously in low-lying areas.
And remember – it’ll be hot and humid as a sauna out there, with temperatures soaring to a sweaty 32-35 degrees Celsius. There’s a moderate breeze blowing from the east/northeast, but don’t be fooled—gusty winds could come a-knocking during those surprise thunderstorms. Seas are moderate, so no excuses not to make a splash if you see the chance to!
As for Sunday’s outlook: Expect the drama to continue with occasional rain and a few thunderstorms over the Yasawa Group, Northern regions, along with the interior and eastern parts of Viti Levu. Elsewhere, it’s partly cloudy with isolated afternoon antics of showers and thunderstorms, just to keep things spicy. Again, be alert to heavy downpours that might result in flash flooding—final call for those floaties!
Highlights for specific hotspots:
– In Navua/Suva/Nausori, cloudy skies with some adventurous thunderstorms brewing today.
– Over in Nadi/Lautoka/Ba, it’s looking partly cloudy with possible evening showers—might want to keep that umbrella handy!
– Sigatoka/Coral Coast? You guessed it—cloudy and thunderstormy!
– Slightly cheeky Tavua/Rakiraki can expect similar weather with a side of heavy drops.
– Yasawa/Mamanuca group: A cloudy party today with some thunderous applause expected.
– Labasa and Savusavu are not missing out either—expect some showers and potential thunder claps.
– For Kadavu and Rotuma, it’s cloudy with showers, leaving no stone unturned in the weather department!
So, gear up, grab your raincoat and flip-flops, and get ready for a rollercoaster weekend with Mother Nature!
