Weather Update: Hold onto Your Hats and Umbrellas!

Issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre Nadi on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 3:30 PM.

Attention, everyone! A STRONG WIND WARNING continues to be the talk of the town, especially if you’re in the Northern Division, northeastern Viti Levu (that’s from Tailevu North to Ra-Rakiraki, in case you’re wondering), Yasawa, Mamanuca, Lau, Lomaiviti, Kadavu, and even those cheeky smaller islands nearby. If you thought your hair had a bad day today, just wait until those strong southeasterly winds show up!

And if you thought today was a bit too dry, we’ve got a HEAVY RAIN ALERT in the Northern Division and surrounding areas such as Yasawa, Lau, and the eastern half of Viti Levu. Now might be a good time to invest in a raincoat that doubles as a flotation device!

Current Situation: We’re currently experiencing a delightful southeast wind flow over the country, while our old friend Tropical Depression TD09F is lurking over the far northeast, plotting its southward journey toward Fiji. It’s anticipated to make a dramatic entrance into Fiji waters, possibly becoming the talk of the town as a Tropical Depression – no red carpet, though. This meteorological guest is likely to stir up some strong to near gale-force winds starting later tomorrow. Buckle up; it’s going to get bumpy!

Forecast until Midnight Tomorrow for the Fiji Group:

Buckle up in the Northern Division and the northern parts of Viti Levu! Mild to fresh southeasterly winds will soon transition into strong southeasterlies reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h and some gusts that will make you feel as if you’re back in a wind tunnel—up to 65 km/h, to be precise. The seas are set to go from ordinary to rough, and then they’ll throw a little tantrum and become very rough!

We’re seeing cloudy periods, and it wouldn’t be a complete weather report without mentioning showers, likely arriving over Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva, and a plethora of other areas. It’s going to rain—surprise! Expect some heavy downpours and occasional thunderstorms to light up the sky—hopefully not too much real estate for lightning to claim!

Outlook for Monday: Oh boy! It seems that strong winds just love to hang around. Expect whip-smart near-gale southerly winds reaching up to 60 km/h with gusts that could take your breath away—literally, up to 75 km/h! Rain will be a constant companion, and squally thunderstorms may join the party—don’t forget to bring your galoshes!

For particular locations:
– **Navua/Suva/Nausori:** Expect winds to pick up and rain to fall with occasional thunderstorms.
– **Nadi/Lautoka/Ba:** Enjoy a sprinkle or two, along with potential thunderstorms that might decide to come in for a visit.
– **Sigatoka/Coral Coast:** Fine with a few possible rainshowers, but don’t let that relax you too much—thunderstorms could crash the sunshine party!

As for the islands—Kadavu, Lau, and Lomaiviti—get ready for those moderate to fresh southeasterly winds to upgrade to full-blown strong winds. And Rotuma? Strong winds and potential flooding!

What’s the takeaway? Keep those umbrellas handy, steer clear of strong winds, and stay tuned for updates as we track this stormy drama unfold! Be safe and let Mother Nature do her thing!
