Severe Weather Alert: Heavy Showers and Thunderstorms Forecasted Across Fiji’s Northern Division and Eastern Regions

Weather Update

Brought to you live from the National Weather Forecasting Centre, Nadi, with our favorite meteorologist (that’s me)! At 3:30 PM on Sunday, March 9, 2025, we have some weather news that’s a bit stormy but still sunny enough to keep your spirits high.

Here’s the scoop: A lazy trough of low pressure is lounging around just north of us, causing a few clouds and showers that have decided to join the party in the northern division and eastern parts over the next few days. In the meantime, southeasterly winds are blowing in, trying to lift our spirits.

Forecasting until midnight tomorrow for the Fiji group: we can expect a sprinkle of showers, with some heavy ones trying to steal the show (and maybe a few rumbles of thunder for dramatic effect) over the Northern Division, Lau, and Lomaiviti groups. Thankfully, the showers will start winding down, easing us back into a more civilized weather situation tomorrow.

In places like Sigatoka, Serua-Namosi, Navua, Suva, Nausori, Tailevu, Naitasiri, Ra, Yasawa, Kadavu, and their barely-there neighboring islands, expect a cloudy blend, topped off with a drizzle of showers. It’ll be kind of nice, except for those sporadic afternoon or evening showers that just can’t resist crashing the scene. Don’t forget — while the weather tries to play nice, thunderstorms with hefty downpours might still be on the horizon.

Heads up: localized heavy rain could cause some flash flooding in low-lying areas, so keep your umbrella handy and avoid paddling your way to work! Expect moderate to fresh southeasterly winds, which may get a little gusty, and the seas will be moderate to rough—perfect for a dramatic beach scene!

Moving forward to Tuesday: we’ll see a similar show, with occasional showers and the potential for a few lightning shows in the Northern Division, Lau, and Lomaiviti groups. Cloudy periods with some showers will also be on the agenda over the Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, Tailevu, Naitasiri, Ra, Yasawa, Kadavu, and their multitude of tiny friends.

For our lovely areas:
– **Navua/Suva/Nausori**: More clouds and more showers. Afternoon or evening thunderstorms might swing by for an encore!
– **Nadi/Lautoka/Ba**: Looking fine, except for some pesky showers — just an afternoon or evening cameo, with the usual heavy downpours included.
– **Sigatoka/Coral Coast**: As cloudy as your cousin who always forgets your birthday, with showers and the possibility of thunderstorms.
– **Tavua/Rakiraki**: Fine but don’t be surprised if a shower or two pops up unexpectedly.
– **Yasawa/Mamanuca**: Cloudy over Yasawa but fine elsewhere, with some occasional showers wanting attention.

For Labasa and Savusavu: Expect those occasional heavy showers and a bit of thunder to keep things interesting.

In Lau/Lomaiviti: More of the same, with showers showing up now and then.

Kadavu? A confident mix of clouds and showers is on the horizon.

Finally, on Rotuma: A trough of low pressure hangs around, ensuring showers and thunderstorms are your entertainment for the day. Moderate to fresh northwesterly winds will keep things lively, alongside moderate to rough seas, perfect for a dramatic ocean tale.

So pack your umbrella, and if the sun peeks out, bask in those glorious rays! Stay dry and safe, everyone!
