Weather Update:
Issued by the National Weather Forecasting Centre Nadi at 3:30 PM on Sunday, April 13, 2025
Greetings, weather watchers! It appears we have a rather uncooperative weak trough of low pressure lounging around the eastern parts of Fiji like a reluctant couch potato. It’s decided to pump up those northeasterly winds for us. But don’t get too comfy, because another slightly more enthusiastic trough is making its way from the west on Tuesday, ready to bring along some rain and thunderstorms—think of it as a weather surprise party, only less fun and more damp!
Here’s what you can expect until midnight tomorrow across our beautiful island group:
Expect occasional showers that might catch you off guard with their intensity—yes, heavy showers are on the guest list, complete with a side of isolated thunderstorms. This will especially be the case in the eastern and interior parts of Viti Levu, including the coastal zones from Serua-Namosi through Navua-Suva-Nausori up to Tailevu North (try saying that five times fast!). Also, the eastern and interior parts of Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Lau, Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu, and those charming smaller islands are in for a wet treat.
Elsewhere, just some good old-fashioned cloudiness with occasional showers might be happening, and don’t be surprised by the odd thunderstorm that rolls in during the afternoon or evening.
Heads up: localised heavy falls could lead to flash flooding, particularly in low-lying or flood-prone areas, so keep those rain boots handy!
We’re looking at moderate to fresh northeasterly winds, perhaps gusty enough to make you hold on to your hats. The seas will be moderate to rough, so those sailing plans might need a rethink.
Now, here’s what’s cooking for Tuesday: get ready for those showers to ramp up into full-bore rain, likely on the frequent and heavy side, with thunderstorms playing a starring role over many of our regions mentioned above.
In more specific forecasts for some beloved locations:
**Navua / Suva / Nausori:** Don’t forget your umbrellas—you’ll have occasional showers that could get heavy, topped off with some isolated thunderstorms.
**Sigatoka/Coral Coast:** Expect cloudy periods with a brief splash of showers. Don’t forget the classic afternoon or evening thunderstorms with heavy downpours—those little surprises really love to show up uninvited.
**Nadi / Lautoka / Ba:** Same story here—cloudiness, a few showers, perhaps a boisterous afternoon thunderstorm putting on a show.
**Tavua/Rakiraki:** You guessed it—cloudy periods with brief showers, an encore performance from those afternoon or evening thunderstorms.
**Natadradave/Korovou:** Showers are on the agenda, heavy at times, along with the occasional thunderstorm looking for a stage to crash.
**Yasawa/Mamanuca:** Cloudy skies, brief showers, and those cheeky thunderstorms returning for their evening act.
**Labasa:** Yes, another cloudy day with brief showers and those unpredictable thunderstorms making a grand entrance.
**Savusavu:** It looks like a mix of occasional showers, hefty at times, with a few thunderstorm surprises.
**For Lau / Lomaiviti and Kadavu:** More of the same—occasional heavy showers with the company of thunder.
**And finally, Rotuma:** An active trough of low pressure is hanging around, ensuring we have plenty of rain and possibly a few squally thunderstorms. The situation will keep things interesting till tomorrow, with moderate east to northeast winds and seas that might not be the best for a lazy float.
That’s the scoop on the weather! Stay dry (or at least try to) and keep your sense of humor as we navigate this wet week ahead!
