Severe Weather Alert: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Expected Across Fiji with Flash Flooding Risk

Weather Update

Situation: You might want to carry an umbrella today—or better yet, a small ark—because a delightful trough of low pressure is hanging out just to the west of us, and it brought along its buddy, a second trough of low pressure, who decided to camp out to the east. These two are causing quite the ruckus by showering the western parts of our beautiful islands with some love in the form of rain. Expect their antics to continue for the next few days!

Forecast until midnight tonight for the Fiji group:
Brace yourself for occasional showers and maybe some isolated thunderstorms while Yasawa, Mamanuca, Western Viti Levu (think Sigatoka to Tavua), Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands, as well as Lau and Lomaiviti groups, get a little splash party started. The eastern half of Viti Levu (from Serua/Namosi all the way to Nausori) will also see some cloudy periods paired with showers. Isolated heavy falls could lead to localised flooding, so consider building a sandbag fortress in low-lying areas.

Elsewhere, expect a touch of the partly cloudy with a side of afternoon or evening showers, and maybe a thunderstorm or two. Moderate east to northeasterly winds will keep things interesting—especially during those heavy rain bursts. Don’t forget the seas are moderately moody too!

Outlook for Wednesday: More of the same! Expect cloudy periods with occasional showers and some cheeky thunderstorms. Isolated heavy falls are likely over the eastern half of Viti Levu (that’s Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, and friends), the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, as well as Kadavu and surrounding islands. Showers will also make appearances elsewhere, especially in the afternoons and evenings.

For specific forecasts:

Navua / Suva / Nausori: Cloudy periods with a healthy dose of showers and a thunderstorm or two.

Nadi / Lautoka / Ba: Occasional showers and those thrill-seeking thunderstorms with heavy falls. Expect sun to peek through, but hold on to your hats for those afternoon showers and storms!

Sigatoka/Coral Coast: Occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms with the promise of heavy showers. But, never fear—fine weather may sneak in during the day, only to be followed by evening drama.

Tavua/Rakiraki: Cloudy skies and occasional showers over Rakiraki. As for the rest, showers and thunderstorms ready to steal the show.

Yasawa/Mamanuca group: More showers and isolated thunderstorms on the menu.

Labasa: Partly cloudy today but don’t let your guard down—thunderstorms are lurking, which could lead to localised heavy falls.

Savusavu: Expect cloudiness with showers and possibly some heavy thunderous forecasts.

Lau/Lomaiviti: Showers and thunderstorms unpredictably making their appearances.

Kadavu: Occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms will keep you on your toes, especially with the risk of isolated heavy falls.

Rotuma: A trough of low pressure has settled in, with occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms playing out. Showers should ease up tomorrow; don’t worry, the islands won’t float away yet!

So there you have it! A weather forecast that’s sure to keep you entertained, even if it gets a bit drizzly. Don’t forget your umbrella, and maybe enjoy a leisurely cup of tea while watching the skies!
