Severe Weather Alert: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Expected Across Fiji Island Group

Weather Update Warning

Issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre Nadi at 3:30 PM on April 2, 2025

Hold onto your umbrellas, folks! A HEAVY RAIN ALERT is officially waving its flags for the eastern half of Viti Levu, covering areas from Serua/Namosi to Navua, Nausori, Tailevu, Naitasiri, and Ba/Ra. If you’re in the Northern Division, or lounging on the Lau and Lomaiviti group, Kadavu, or some of those quaint nearby islands, you’re in for a surprise shower party!

Currently, a sneaky trough of low pressure has decided to settle over us, bringing along a cloud and shower festival expected to last for the next few days. Looks like Mother Nature just bought a ticket to the rainy side of life!

Forecast until midnight tomorrow for the Fiji group: Expect occasional showers and possibly some uninvited thunderstorms gate-crashing your outdoor plans over Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, Tailevu, Naitasiri, Ra, the Northern Division, Lau, Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu, as well as the Yasawa and Mamanuca group. Isolated heavy falls are likely to pop up, so keep your waterproof gear handy!

Elsewhere, it’s mostly partly cloudy with a chance of brief showers, because why not sprinkle in some uncertainty?

With afternoon or evening thunderstorms shaking things up with heavy downpours over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, the localised and persistent heavy showers just might be putting on a show. Beware of flash flooding in low-lying areas, because a splash zone might be just around the corner!

“Weather-watching” will reveal moderate to fresh northeast to southeast winds, with seas acting like they’re ready for a rollercoaster ride, ranging from moderate to rough.

Looking ahead to Friday: Expect cloudy periods with some showers—yes, the clouds are persistent little things—especially over Serua-Namosi, Navua, Suva, Nausori, Tailevu, Naitasiri, Ra, Southern Bua, Cakaudrove, Lau, and the Lomaiviti groups, not to mention Kadavu and those smaller islands. More afternoon or evening showers are on the horizon, so remember, it’s not a monsoon without a little thunder!

For the local breakdown:

– Navua / Suva / Nausori: Occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms on the horizon.
– Nadi / Lautoka / Ba: Expect partly cloudy skies with the chance of brief showers, followed by afternoon thunderstorms that may serve heavy falls.
– Sigatoka/Coral Coast: Mostly partly cloudy with brief showers and surprise thunderstorms requiring raincoats.
– Tavua/Rakiraki: Occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms—the perfect recipe for a cozy indoor day.
– Yasawa/Mamanuca group: Mostly partly cloudy with brief showers too. Who knew the weather could be so social?
– Labasa: Brace yourselves for occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms making appearances.
– Savusavu: Showers just can’t help but drop by occasionally, with some possible thunderstorms.
– Lau/Lomaiviti and Kadavu: Both in for some recurring shower fun—just can’t shake it off!
– Rotuma: An easterly wind flow means it’s fine aside from brief showers, before possible thunderstorms crash the scene later.

So, whether it’s sun showers or stormy embraces, keep an eye out for the wild weather patterns ahead! Stay dry, stay safe, and don’t forget to smile—it’s just water, right?
