Severe Weather Alert: Fiji Faces Christmas Deluge!

On Christmas day across the regions of Viti Levu, Yasawa, Mamanuca groups, Beqa, Vatulele, Kadavu, and surrounding smaller islands, as well as Lau and Lomaiviti groups, a heavy rain warning has been issued. Flood warnings are also in effect for areas near the Ba, Nasivi (Tvua), and Nakauvadra (Rakiraki) rivers, which are prone to flooding.

According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, the warning affects numerous locations, including Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, as well as the interior of Ba, Ra Province, and parts of the Nadroga/Navosa, Serua/Namosi, Naitasiri, Tailevu regions, along with the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Kadavu, and nearby smaller islands in Lau and Lomaiviti.

The forecast predicts continued rainfall, which may be heavy at times, interspersed with thunderstorms. The country is currently influenced by an active trough of low pressure, which is resulting in the ongoing rainfall.

In the past 24 hours, significant rainfall amounts have been recorded in various locations, with Nadarivatu receiving 145.0mm, Lautoka Mill recording 135.5mm, and Rarawai Mill measuring 132.0mm, among others.
