A significant rain warning is currently in effect for the entire Fiji group. According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, an active trough of low pressure, coupled with clouds and rainfall, is slowly moving over the northeastern regions of Fiji and is expected to continue affecting the area until Monday.
Furthermore, another trough of low pressure is anticipated to approach the group, starting tomorrow. The Fiji Met has indicated that rain is likely to intensify from later this evening, particularly over Viti Levu. There are concerns that localized heavy rainfall combined with thunderstorms could result in flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Regions under the heavy rain warning include the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, the Northern Division, as well as Ra-Rakiraki, Northern Ba-Ra, and the interior regions of Ra, Naitasiri, Serua-Namosi, Ba, and Nadroga/Navosa. The greater Suva-Nausori-Tailevu areas, along with the Lau and Lomaiviti Groups, are also affected.
While heavy rains and the possibility of flooding can be concerning, such weather systems also bring much-needed water for agriculture and help replenish local water supplies. This could be a silver lining for farmers and communities relying on stable water sources for their livelihoods. However, residents are advised to remain vigilant and prepared for adverse weather conditions in the coming days.
