Severe Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall Expected Across Fiji This Weekend

Weather Update:

Issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi at 7:30 PM, Saturday, March 29, 2025

Situation: Ahoy, weather fans! We’ve got a low-pressure trough hanging out like it’s on holiday over the southern parts of Fiji. Meanwhile, a weaker, but equally lazy trough is meandering around the northern region. Thanks to these cozy atmospheric couch potatoes, we’re in for a showery experience over the next few days.

Forecast until midnight tomorrow for the dazzling Fiji group: Get ready for some intermittent showers and a few thunderstorms, with sporadic heavy downpours sprinkled throughout your plans. Those severe thunderstorms might decide to crash the party in the afternoon or evening, especially over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. So, if you hear thunder, just remember: that’s Mother Nature’s way of letting you know she’s not a big fan of umbrella designs!

Heads up! Intense rainfall from these thunderstorms could lead to flash flooding in low-lying areas, so keep those boats and rubber duckies handy. Meanwhile, expect moderate north to southeast winds and seas that might have a bit of a hiccup.

Outlook for Monday: We’re predicting some cloud cover with patchy showers over southern and eastern Viti Levu (from Sigatoka right through to Suva and Tailevu, including interior Tailevu, Naitasiri, and Ra), as well as the Lau and Lomaiviti groups and Kadavu, plus some charming smaller islands. Expect more afternoon or evening showers with the weird possibility of thunderstorms lurking in other areas. Winds will continue their moderate dance from southeast to southwest with seas that won’t be winning any surfing competitions.

Specific area forecasts:

– Navua/Suva/Nausori: Brace yourselves for intermittent showers and a few thunderstorm surprises! Afternoon or evening storms could hit hard with heavy rainfall.

– Nadi/Lautoka/Ba: Generally fine but expect some afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms ready to unleash their best dramatic performances.

– Sigatoka/Coral Coast: Occasional showers coupled with a few thunderstorms could keep you on your toes.

– Tavua/Rakiraki: Fine and dandy until the afternoon or evening when some showers and thunderstorms might decide to rain on your parade.

– Yasawa/Mamanuca group: Expected to remain fine but shouldn’t get too comfortable. Thunderstorms may crash your beach day in the afternoon.

– Labasa: Mostly fine, just a few scattered showers may pop up in the afternoon or evening for dramatic effect.

– Savusavu: Occasional showers, with some thunderstorms threatening to steal the show.

– Lau/Lomaiviti and Kadavu: Occasional showers and thunderstorms with some heavy falls are in the forecast, who knew they were such social butterflies?

– Rotuma: It’s a cloudy affair with some occasional showers and the odd thunderstorm making guest appearances.

Outlook for Monday: A continuation of cloudy periods with some showers and sneaky thunderstorms here and there.

So grab your umbrellas, put on your raincoats, and get ready for a rollercoaster of weather that’s as unpredictable as your favorite soap opera plot twist!
