Severe Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall Expected Across Fiji This Weekend

Severe Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall Expected Across Fiji This Weekend

Weather Alert

Brought to you by the National Weather Forecasting Centre Nadi, as of 3:30 PM on Thursday, March 20, 2025.

Hold onto your umbrellas, folks! A HEAVY RAIN WARNING is in effect, and we’re expecting some severe afternoon thunderstorms to make their grand entrance over the western half of Viti Levu, taking a tour from the sunny shores of Sigatoka all the way up to the lively Tavua. You might want to keep your raincoat on standby!

For our friends in the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, as well as Kadavu and those charming smaller islands, get ready for a deluge: a HEAVY RAIN ALERT is also in place for you. This includes the eastern half of Viti Levu – that’s the stretch from Serua/Namosi through Navua all the way up to Suva, and venturing into Tailevu, Naitasiri, and Ra. Oh, and let’s not forget our buddies in eastern Vanua Levu, where Cakaudrove Province, Taveuni, and nearby isles will also feel the splash.

What’s causing all this waterworks? A sluggish trough of low pressure has settled over the eastern parts of the group, while another one is shambling in from the southwest and planning to hover over Fiji’s eastern regions later today. Expect cloud cover and rain to hang around for the next few days, kind of like that friend who overstays their welcome!

From now until midnight tomorrow, we’re looking at occasional rain—heavy at times with a few spontaneous thunderstorms crashing the party over Lau, Lomaiviti, Kadavu, and the eastern part of Viti Levu. Don’t let the sunny spells fool you; isolated heavy showers mean some areas may experience flash flooding, so keep your floaties nearby!

Moderate easterly winds and seas are keeping things manageable out there, but Saturday is looking like a repeat performance. So, expect more of the same with periodic rains, thunderstorms, and all the drama that comes with it.

Now, for the localized forecasts:

– Navua / Suva / Nausori: Frequent rain alert! Grab your galoshes because heavy downpours and thunderstorms are on the agenda.
– Nadi / Lautoka / Ba: Looks good overall, but some afternoon or evening showers may join the mix.
– Sigatoka / Coral Coast: Your forecast is a delightful combination of sun and the occasional shower, embellished with some thunder.
– Tavua / Rakiraki: Cloudy with some showers and a few thunderstorms. Rain might crank up later, but fine weather is just around the corner.
– Yasawa / Mamanuca: Mostly fine, but keep an eye out for isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms—like sneaky ninjas!
– Labasa: Cloudy with a chance of showers and a few thunderstorms dropping by, bringing along isolated heavy falls.
– Savusavu: Occasional rain and thunderstorms stirring things up!
– Lau / Lomaiviti: Heavy rains and thunderstorms are invited to the party. So, put on your rain dancing shoes!
– Kadavu: Similar vibes to Lau, so prepare for some wet fun.

Rotuma: Fine weather with bouncy afternoon showers and a thunderstorm or two. Moderate easterly winds will whip through—like a gentle reminder to keep that hat strapped on!

For Saturday’s performance: expect more rain and thunder to keep things lively! Remember to take precautions and stay safe out there!
