Weather Update
Reporting from the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi at an energizing 11:00 PM on Friday, March 28, 2025.
Situation: Picture this—a lazy trough of low pressure has decided to set up camp over the southern parts of our beautiful nation. It’s got a cozy collection of clouds and showers ready to shower (pun intended) the eastern parts of the country with some delightful precipitation over the next few days.
Forecast to midnight Saturday for the Fiji group:
Brace yourselves! We’re in for a plethora of occasional showers and a few friendly thunderstorms that might just make things interesting. We’re talking about isolated heavy downpours in places like Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, Tailevu, Naitasiri, Ra, southern Bua, Cakaudrove, Kadavu, the smaller islands nearby, and oh yes, Lau and Lomaiviti groups as well. Expect the showers to put on their party hats and potentially escalate to good ol’ torrential rain later in the evening. And if that isn’t enough, keep an eye out for some severe thunderstorms crashing the party in the afternoon.
Remember, heavy downpours can lead to some proper flash floods, especially in those low-lying and flood-prone areas, so keep your floaties handy!
Moderate to fresh easterly winds are set to join the festivities, getting a bit gusty when the thunderstorms roll in. Not to forget, seas will be moderate to rough—perfect conditions for a seaweed salad, if you’re into that sort of thing.
Outlook for Sunday: Rinse and repeat! Occasional showers and a few thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls will still be stealing the spotlight over the eastern half of Viti Levu. Expect the same cast of characters—Lau, Lomaiviti, Kadavu, a sprinkle of the smaller islands, Cakaudrove, and southern Bua—all under the clouds’ embrace, with rain making its grand entrance in the evening.
Fine weather will still manage to poke through elsewhere, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s smooth sailing as afternoon thunderstorms are likely to take center stage on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.
For specific areas:
Navua / Suva / Nausori:
Occasional showers and thunderstorms are on the guest list, with some heavyweight downpours making afternoon or evening appearances. Expect the showers to turn into a rain dance overnight.
Nadi / Lautoka / Ba:
Another area enjoying the fine weather along with some expected afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms. Just keep your umbrellas close!
Sigatoka/Coral Coast:
Clouds will break up the sunshine with brief showers and the possibility of heavy afternoon or evening thunderstorms. Drizzle and thunder with a twist of excitement!
Tavua/Rakiraki:
Here, fine weather will reign supreme except for those pesky afternoon or evening showers and thunder. Think of it as a sprinkle of spice in a fine dish!
Yasawa/Mamanuca group:
Just like Tavua and Rakiraki, expect a lovely day with just a dash of afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms.
Labasa:
A partly cloudy day is coming your way with some isolated sprinkles and the occasional thunderstorm. Get ready for some dramatic weather changes in the afternoon!
Savusavu:
Expect an encore of occasional showers and a few thunderous performances, especially as night falls. Rain could sweep in as the night unfolds.
Lau/Lomaiviti and Kadavu:
Both regions will be treated to showers and thunder, so keep your umbrellas at the ready! The evening might get a bit wetter as heavy falls could join the parade.
Rotuma:
A low-pressure trough is bringing you clouds and showers—so savvy Rotuma residents, expect some occasional showers, possibly with a thunderstorm or two to spice it up. That moist easterly wind is likely to ensure no one goes thirsty!
