Weather Alert: The Great Fiji Rain Festival is Here!

Issued by the National Weather Forecasting Centre Nadi at 7:30 PM on Saturday, March 1, 2025.

Listen up, everyone! Grab your umbrellas and don’t forget your scuba gear because we’ve got a heavy rain warning for the western, northern, and interior regions of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, along with the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Kadavu, and some of those adorable little nearby islands. For the rest of Fiji? Well, expect a lighter drizzle but still pack your raincoat just in case!

What’s happening, you ask? An active trough of low pressure is barging into our weather like an uninvited guest, bringing clouds, rain, and the kind of northwest winds that might just blow your hat off! This rain extravaganza will be spreading east like a good gossip, continuing through Monday.

Now, for your forecast before midnight tomorrow across the Fiji group:

Prepare for a mix of rain—sometimes heavy, with the potential for thunderstorms to crash the party, especially over areas like Greater Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, and their friends in the interior. And yes, there’s a chance of localized heavy downpours that may kick-start flash flooding in those low-lying areas. So, if you bought property in a flood zone, you might want to look away.

For everyone else, expect occasional rain and a few surprises in the form of thunderstorms. Isolated heavy falls will also keep you guessing, especially in the afternoon or evening.

The winds? Moderate to fresh from the northwest, gustier than a windy day at the beach when the rain hits, and seas are moderate to rough. So maybe leave your boat in port for now.

Looking ahead to Monday? More of the same: rain, thunderous applause from angry clouds, and localized heavy falls leading to possible flash flooding—your usual weather drama.

Here’s a little regional breakdown:

Navua/Suva/Nausori: Don’t be shy, rain and a few thunderstorms will grace your area. Expect localized heavy falls, particularly in the afternoon or evening.

Nadi/Lautoka/Ba: Heavy rain is ready to make an entrance, along with some dramatic thunderstorms. Don’t forget that flash flooding may crash the scene, too.

Sigatoka/Coral Coast, Tavua/Rakiraki, Yasawa/Mamanuca group: Repeat after me, “rain, heavy at times.” The series continues with the risk of flash floods.

Labasa: Continuing the trend of occasional rains and isolated thunderstorms, which could lead to watery adventures in low-lying areas.

Savusavu: Showers are the name of the game, along with the occasional thunderstorm that loves to make an appearance in the afternoon or evening.

Lau/Lomaiviti and Kadavu: Expect the same weather patterns with some serious rain action, heavy at times.

Finally, for Rotuma: A moist northerly wind flow continues, with cloudy skies and some showers to keep things interesting. Just when you thought it wouldn’t rain, here it comes!

So, ready yourselves for a wet and wild ride this weekend, Fiji! Stay safe, stay dry, and most importantly, keep your sense of humor afloat amid the puddles!
