The upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, scheduled for January 16-18, 2025, at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, is building anticipation as it may present the last chance for fans to witness rugby legends Jerry Tuwai and Rosko Specman on the field together. Both celebrated players will form part of the Mike Friday Select 7s team, igniting excitement among rugby enthusiasts.

Jerry Tuwai, renowned as a two-time Olympic gold medalist and former World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year, has recently earned a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. Tuwai is acclaimed not only for his extraordinary skills and leadership but also for embodying the spirit of Fijian rugby through his humility and flair on the global stage.

On the other hand, Rosko Specman, affectionately nicknamed “Specmagic,” is recognized for his incredible speed and agility. He played a pivotal role in South Africa’s triumph during the 2017/2018 HSBC World Series and has successfully transitioned into 15s rugby with the Cheetahs in the Pro 14 competition. Specman also carries an impressive accolade of two bronze medals from the Rio (2016) and Paris (2024) Olympics.

This tournament is especially historic as it marks the first occasion these iconic rivals will unite as teammates, having faced each other multiple times in international competitions. The Mike Friday Select 7s team will also feature other notable players, including former Irish 7s captain Harry McNulty and American standout Matai Leuta, along with a talented group of Fijian athletes like Lasaro Bogisa and Iowane Teba.

The Coral Coast 7s is set to host a total of 44 teams—16 men’s teams, 16 youth teams, and 12 women’s teams—promising a vibrant atmosphere filled with thrilling matches that will showcase both local and international talent. With free admission, the event invites community participation, emphasizing unity and camaraderie.

As fans gather to celebrate this momentous occasion, the tournament serves not only as a farewell to Tuwai and Specman but also as an inspiration for the next generation of rugby players. It stands as a testament to the unifying power of sport and the rich rugby culture in Fiji, providing hope and encouragement for future talent. The Coral Coast 7s embodies the spirit of the game, with anticipation high for a remarkable display of skills and sportsmanship that fosters love for rugby in the region.
