The 31st R.C. Manubhai Nataleira Sevens tournament is poised to enhance grassroots rugby in the country. This message was conveyed by tournament director Solo Finau during the official launch held at the R.C. Manubhai Suva branch store.

Finau emphasized the need for strategic innovation to improve gameplay for players. He expressed, “We must create a tournament and concept that allows players and coaches to benefit in various ways.” He advocated for the introduction of new ideas rather than sticking to traditional approaches to sevens rugby.

A notable change in this year’s tournament is the implementation of a bonus points system. Finau detailed two types of bonus points: one awarded to a player who scores under the posts, provided the try is successfully converted, and another for a team that scores a converted try, a converted penalty, and a drop goal within seven minutes of play.

The innovation aims to encourage players and coaches to think outside the box when it comes to scoring. “World Cups have been won by drop goals by nations like South Africa, England, and Australia,” he noted. Finau is optimistic that this tournament format will foster a new culture for players aspiring to represent the national sevens team.

He added that if every team sought to score under the posts, it would prompt stronger defensive strategies from opponents, ultimately elevating the competitive nature of the matches. The tournament also aims to provide teams with the opportunity to practice these formats in future events.

R.C. Manubhai’s regional manager, Atish Singh, expressed their appreciation for being a part of the Nataleira Sevens, highlighting the tournament’s consistent growth with hopes for even greater success next year.

The event is scheduled to take place at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori from December 19–21.

This tournament promises not only to bring excitement but also to foster the development of rugby talent in the region, ensuring a brighter future for the sport. By introducing innovative scoring methods, it challenges players to adapt and enhances the overall quality of rugby play.
