The upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, scheduled for January 16 to 18, 2025, at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, is generating considerable excitement as it may potentially mark the last appearance of rugby legends Jerry Tuwai and Rosko Specman in sevens rugby. Both icons will team up on the Mike Friday Select 7s squad, a highly anticipated collaboration after years of fierce competition against each other on the field.

Jerry Tuwai, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and former World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year, is celebrated for his exceptional skill and leadership. He recently added a silver medal from the Paris Summer Olympics in 2024 to his impressive list of achievements. Tuwai exemplifies the spirit of Fiji rugby, known for his humility and flair.

On the other hand, Rosko Specman, affectionately called “Specmagic,” is renowned for his incredible speed and agility. Specman played a pivotal role in South Africa’s triumph during the 2017/2018 HSBC World Series and has successfully transitioned to 15-a-side rugby with the Cheetahs in the Pro 14 league. He has also earned bronze medals at both the Rio and Paris Olympics, solidifying his legacy in rugby.

The Coral Coast 7s promises to be a grand event, featuring a total of 44 teams, consisting of 16 men’s, 16 youth, and 12 women’s teams. The Mike Friday Select 7s team will also include notable players like former Irish 7s captain Harry McNulty and American standout Matai Leuta, alongside promising Fijian talents such as Lasaro Bogisa and Iowane Teba.

As rugby fans come together for what is not only a farewell to Tuwai and Specman but a celebration of the sport itself, the tournament aims to inspire young athletes and promote rugby culture across the region. With free admission, this event encourages a community atmosphere, allowing fans from all backgrounds to gather and experience the thrill of rugby.

Overall, the Coral Coast 7s is poised to provide an electrifying spectacle that melds the prowess of established legends with the enthusiasm of the next generation. It stands as a beacon of hope and unity, reinforcing the rich tapestry of rugby heritage in Fiji and inspiring future talent.
