“Set Sail for Success: Why Students Should Embrace Maritime Careers”

Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has urged students to pursue careers in the maritime industry. Speaking at the World Maritime Day celebrations held at Albert Park in Suva, he highlighted the pressing demand for skilled workers in this sector.

Ro Filipe noted that many skilled professionals are leaving Fiji to work overseas, creating a gap in the local workforce. He encouraged students to take up maritime careers to help fill this void. “As we know, one of the major issues faced by Fiji is the emigration of our technically adept individuals,” he remarked.

He expressed gratitude to the students who have opted for the maritime industry, stating, “We need more.” Ro Filipe acknowledged the struggles shipping operators encounter in finding qualified crew, underscoring the significance of this matter.

The Minister explained that the annual event aimed to celebrate the vital role of the maritime sector, focusing on safety, innovation, and sustainable practices. This year’s theme, “Navigating the Future: Safety First,” highlights the importance of safety in ensuring a secure and sustainable maritime future.
