Waisale Serevi, known as the King of Sevens, is set to join the coaching staff led by Sireli Bobo for the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) Under-20 team as they prepare for an upcoming tour in New Zealand. The announcement was made just yesterday as the team commenced their training camp.
Serevi’s involvement comes after a meeting with the acting Chief Executive Officer of FSC, Gilbert Vakalalabure, where he expressed his eagerness to mentor the young athletes. This addition to the coaching staff is anticipated to bring a wealth of experience, passion, and strategic insight, enhancing the players’ development as they navigate their rugby careers.
The FSC stated, “The future of Fijian rugby just got even brighter,” highlighting the significance of Serevi’s participation in nurturing the next generation of rugby talent. The players making up the Under-20 squad were selected from the FSC U20 sevens series, which included five legs, commencing in Navua and culminating at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium on November 30.
Bobo emphasized that the primary objective is to foster player development, particularly from grassroots levels, so they can compete at a higher level. The team is scheduled to depart for New Zealand on January 29, marking an important step in their competitive journey.
This initiative not only underscores the commitment to building future rugby talent in Fiji but also reflects the country’s rich tradition in the sport, promising an exciting future for its young athletes.
