Fijian rugby icon Waisale Serevi is set to lead the Fijian Drua 7s team as head coach during the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, scheduled from January 16 to 18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Serevi, a celebrated figure and World Rugby Hall of Famer known for his contributions to sevens rugby, expressed immense gratitude for returning to coach a Fijian team after a 16-year absence, calling the opportunity both an “honor and privilege.”
Joining Serevi on the coaching staff is Sam Speight, the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua. Drua Head Coach Glen Jackson voiced his excitement about the tournament, emphasizing its importance as a platform for players accustomed to 15s rugby to showcase their skills against some of Fiji’s top sevens talent.
The Coral Coast 7s is known as a premier tournament that attracts both local and international teams and has previously featured rugby legends, adding to its prestige and excitement. The event serves as a valuable opportunity for the Drua to compete at a high level, with over half of Fiji’s population expected to tune in to support their matches.
Serevi’s involvement is anticipated to inject a renewed sense of hope into the Drua team and inspire younger generations to embrace the sport. The tournament not only symbolizes a key moment in Serevi’s career but also serves as an exciting chapter for Fijian rugby, reflecting the country’s rich heritage and passion for the game.
Fans are eagerly looking forward to witnessing the exceptional talent displayed at the Coral Coast 7s, where tradition meets ambition in the pursuit of future successes for Fijian rugby.
