Fijian rugby legend Waisale Serevi has been appointed as the head coach of the Fijian Drua 7s team for the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s, taking place from January 16 to 18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Serevi, a renowned figure in sevens rugby and a World Rugby Hall of Famer, expressed his honor at returning to coach a Fijian team after a 16-year hiatus, stating that the opportunity is a significant moment in his career.
Assisting Serevi will be Sam Speight, Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua. The Drua’s head coach, Glen Jackson, echoed Serevi’s sentiments, highlighting the excitement surrounding the tournament and the potential for the team. He emphasized the event as a critical platform for players, particularly those transitioning from 15s rugby, to exhibit their skills against some of the country’s top sevens athletes.
The Coral Coast 7s is celebrated for attracting both local and international teams and aims to generate excitement within the rugby community. It has previously been graced by rugby legends like Serevi and the late Jonah Lomu, enhancing its reputation as a prestigious competition. With over half of the Fijian population tuning in to watch their matches, the fervor for the sport and the Drua is palpable as they prepare for this major event.
Serevi’s involvement is expected to inspire both players and younger generations of rugby enthusiasts, reinforcing a strong rugby culture in Fiji. As the Drua gears up for their participation, fans are hopeful for an impressive showing, marking what promises to be an exciting chapter in Fijian rugby history. This opportunity reflects a combination of tradition, mentorship, and competitive spirit — a bright outlook for the future of Fijian rugby.
