Waisale Serevi, the iconic figure of sevens rugby, has been appointed as the head coach for the Fijian Drua 7s team at the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s in Sigatoka, scheduled from January 16 to 18. Known for his remarkable contributions to the sport, Serevi expressed deep gratitude for returning to coach a Fijian team after 16 years, stating, “It’s an honor and privilege for me.”

Assisting him in this role will be Sam Speight, the Strength and Conditioning Coach for Swire Shipping Fijian Drua. Drua’s head coach, Glen Jackson, shared his enthusiasm for the tournament, emphasizing the exciting opportunity it presents—offering a platform for players primarily engaged in 15s rugby to compete against some of Fiji’s top 7s talents. He noted, “We have a very good team, so we’re excited to be part of it.”

The Coral Coast 7s is not only esteemed for its competition among local and international teams but also for its legacy, having welcomed rugby legends like Serevi, the late Jonah Lomu, and many others honored on Sigatoka’s Rugby Town Walk of Fame. Serevi’s involvement is expected to inspire both the team and the wider Fijian rugby community. With approximately 55% of the Fijian population tuning in to support their games, the excitement continues to build for this prestigious tournament.

This event symbolizes a hopeful moment for Fijian rugby, with Serevi’s leadership promising to elevate the Drua’s performance and inspire the next generation of players as they pursue excellence on the international stage. As the tournament approaches, the anticipation is palpable among fans and athletes alike, reflecting the rich culture and passion for rugby within Fiji.
